The keys to Success

Why do some people not sustain success?

There may be various answers to the question. However, I perceived God desires every child of his to excel and be outstanding in all things. Success can be sustained but its only possible if self dies.

I sensed God telling me the keys to sustained success are humility and dependence on him. I am to depend on him for all instructions. As I consistently obey him, I shall be successful and the success shall be sustained. When I heard this, I had to look up scriptures to be sure I understood the words.

I felt the need to understand humility and dependence so as to have a grasp of what is expected of me and a perfect model to learn from is Christ:

Philippians 2:5-8:

Think of yourselves the way Christ Jesus thought of himself. He had equal status with God but didn't think so much of himself that he had to cling to the advantages of that status no matter what. Not at all. When the time came, he set aside the privileges of deity and took on the status of a slave, became human! Having become human, he stayed human. It was an incredibly humbling process. He didn't claim special privileges. Instead, he lived a selfless, obedient life and then died a selfless, obedient death—and the worst kind of death at that—a crucifixion (The Message).

Humility is about being selfless. Christ was fully God but chose to live a life of service. He did not fold his hands and waited to be served. He was more people oriented; took a lowly position for our sake even though he owned the universe. He did not brag about his God nature, made no demands and accepted to submit himself to death for my sake.

He depended on the Father for he said in John 5:30-33:

"I can't do a solitary thing on my own: I listen, then I decide. You can trust my decision because I'm not out to get my own way but only to carry out orders. If I were simply speaking on my own account, it would be an empty, self-serving witness. But an independent witness confirms me, the most reliable Witness of all. Furthermore, you all saw and heard John, and he gave expert and reliable testimony about me, didn't he?" (The Message)

It became clear to me that humility and dependence on God the Father were the keys to the success of Christ's ministry.
